On Saturday, August 23, after gruelling 14-days of non-stop action, the fourth edition of the GMR Andhra Premier League (APL) concluded at Visakhapatnam’s ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium. After a neck-and-neck battle for the final four spots, it all came down to the wire with the top two teams in Capital Amaravathi Royals and the Tungabhadra Warriors locking horns in the title clash.
The Hanuma Vihari-led Capital Amaravathi Royals, who lost only one match in their road to final, were crushed by the Maheep Kumar-led Tungabhadra Warriors by five wickets on Saturday. After electing to bat first, on the back of skipper Hanuma Vihar’s 51 and a crucial 47-run knock from Manyala Pranith - the Royals posted 194 runs. In reply, the Tungabhadra Warriors chased the total in just 18 overs, courtesy a 45-ball 66 from CR Gnaneshwar and a 28-ball 63 from Gutta Rohit.
While the season not only got some young, budding talents into the forefront, some exceptional numbers were also put from the bat of several players. Vijayawada Sun Shiners’ skipper K Ashwin Hebbar not only broke the charts, finishing as the top run-getter (315 runs), he also stood among the list of players to have registered some of the highest individual scores.
